easter that was

thursday night before easter i did absolutely nothing other than go to sleep, and it was beautiful..

good friday was spent with mitch, louise and latterly sam and sara in this pub in islington drinking ridiculous amounts of fruli... a perfect day in the sunshine, it was grand...

friday night i strolled down upper street to meet sir_guernica and super_loulou for drinks.. lou and i stood for what seemed like a year for our cocktails having been persuaded to get fruity ones because they had loads of fresh fruit, then wish we hadn't bothered.. we were accused by the bar staff of not knowing our cocktails, and all in all it could have been better! but then we went to the peasant for dinner and that was delicious.. i'm now salivating after venison, and am researching where i can buy some from on the internet...

saturday was spent lounging around the flat, i did a bit of tidying, but not much... then spent the evening watching the boxing.. the sooner i can get to a match the better - suzy (from london welsh) and i are going to see if we can get tickets to see calzaghe and khan fight an american and someone else later in the year.. hopefully it'll be at wembley and not in america!

for sunday lunch i went to my sister's in beckenham and we had a delicious roast lamb... i was starving and i think i managed to have 4 out of the 5 portions of fruit and veg in the one meal ;)

speaking of which an update on the volume loss - i've now lost a total of 8cms from my waist - woo hoo - i'm working towards losing 20 in total, so still a way to go yet!

sunday night mitch and russ came round for predrinks then we went to trailer trash which would probably have been better had we managed to get some santa's little helpers, or had the queue for the loo not been 20 people long so putting me off getting drunk!

monday mitch and i went to greenwich park to meet banalitysaves and andy.. we had a picnic and i drank cherry lambrini, it was great, then the sun went down and it was cold and i didn't want to be gay so i came home and stuffed my face with risotto.. all good

in other news, easter's over and done with, it's my birthday next month...

does anyone fancy going to the dog racing at walthamstow dog track?? it's pretty cheap (only £8.50 entrance and 2 drinks included) and i think it could be fun, but would probably be more fun if lots of people went... any takers?

tales of rome

so i had a fabulous time, this is an update of my brief roman sojourn cut to avoid clogging up friends pages with photos

the hostel was less than desirable, but the people in my dorm were cool, even though i was the oldest there, i felt like an old maid, they were all 19 to 21 and thought i was over the hill.. one even mentioned that i wouldn't be able to stay in some hostels soon cos i'll be 26! urgh! never mind...

day one

rome itself was pretty breathtaking, i arrived on the sunday morning, dumped my stuff off at the hostel and went for a walk in the sunshine. the only day of sunshine... it was the rome marathon, so that made for some fun trying to negotiate the streets, first major site i happened upon was the colosseum.

it's bizarre to be walking down any normal european city street to suddenly catch such an iconic image like that out of the corner of your eye...

i ended up having a nap in the gardens of the castel de sant angelo listening to my ipod and i managed to get slightly sunburnt - what a surprise, before i headed up to the vatican

after a stop/start i managed to purchase a gelato - you bizarrely have to pay for it at a separate desk to where they dole out the creamy goodness! after two trips to the cashier i finally managed to get my hands on one and it was delicious..

there were no queues at st peter's so i thought i might as well pop in and it was beautiful..

the sun was streaming through the dome

and the pieta moved me to tears

by the time i came out of the cathedral, the sun was beginning to go down, and it was time to go back to the hostel, i was utterly bushed, managing to have some pasta with my new roommates before heading to bed pretty early.

day two

was spent mostly wandering round seeing various sites, highlight of which was the pantheon, which was the most impressive thing i saw on the whole holiday.

i could have stayed there for hours, and indeed visited it 3 times! and took endless amounts of photos of the dome

an architectural anomaly, it was stunning, and you can clearly see where michaelangelo got his inspiration for st peters!

also seen on that day was the trevi fountain

you could hear it from a hundred meters away, such is the force of the water!

day three

was spent at the vatican museums! the first day it was available to me being shut on sunday and monday.. i went with a couple of guys from my dorm room, we got there for about 8, and it was supposed to open at 8.45, but didn't open til 10, thankfully though as soon as it opened we were virtually in the door... in front of us in the queue though were a group of geordie students - my school never had a trip to rome! how cool would that be?! the best we got was st omer! and that's really not saying much..

of course the whole focus of the vatican museums is to see the sistine chapel at the end, and many people were marching through the other museums just to get there, but we took our time and looked at pretty much everything (or so i think - it's really hard to navigate despite audio guide!) my favourite items being perseus

the gorgeous antinous - i wanted him to give me a hug!

and the stanzi di raphael..

it amused me to hear about how all these great artists in their own right, were busy decorating the rooms at the vatican when raphael rolls into town, the pope the orders the original work destroyed! just imagine how popular he was down the pub!

anyway, the raphael rooms were impressive, in fact the museums as a whole were impressive, even the chairs are decorated.. you can't look anywhere without seeing a painting, or a sculpture or a mosaic, it's just bizarre.. items which would be the star of the show are put in a corner and missed..

so yes, onwards to the sistine chapel... you can't get a real feel for how amazing it is due to the fact that you're cramed in like sardines!

however the last judgement is amazing, and i think i preferred that to the ceiling

day four

my last day, i spent wandering round the city with a girl from the hostel, got hit on by a gelato man (why does it happen two hours before i go home?!)

all in all a really fun holiday, my feet are still aching, and i lost 5 kilos walking round town for 8 hours a day.. i've made some good friends, and we're all in touch which is cool, but i was glad to get home to my own bed!

good week bad week

This week's been a week of ups and downs.

On Monday i spent the day doing a raft of mundane sh*t just for me to come in on Tuesday and find that i'd screwed it up and all 8 hours i'd spent had been for nought.

Tuesday's bad day continued when I realised had not only that happened, but one of my systems had screwed up magically over night and this at the crucial time when it was due to go live - a stressful day!

All relieved by going out for drinks with sir_guernica. We managed to drink far too much and both talked the hind legs off the proverbial donkey. For a first meeting, and being the first lj person i've ever met it went really well and we both had a good time. I'm currently trying to bribe him to come and work for me with promises of hotels, restaurants and just a bit of work!

Yesterday I had the longest day i've done in my new job and didn't leave til gone 7.. i was in again at 8 this morning but have caught up with the stuff i managed to screw up and fix the problem with my system, so the week's looking up, and it's friday tomorrow.

More importantly, this time on Sunday i'll be sat at the trevi fountain sampling the delights of Roma.. I really can't wait.. I'm planning to do the vatican on Monday and maybe again on tuesday depending on how long it takes me to get in on Monday, we shall see... when in rome..

canals, vodka and cheese

On Thursday night I went out with a friend to a local pub and drank a tonne of vodka and cokes.. on the way back to my house we walked along the canal and ended up talking to a guy that was walking in the other direction about whether or not he could see the coots in the water - they were driving me insane with their incessant honking. It turned out he could see the coots and wanted to join them, and despite much protestation on my part and encouragement from my friend, he then gave me his doner meat and chips and jumped into the canal fully clothed! We pulled him out, at which point he was very indignant that we hadn’t filmed it.. but really who expects someone to jump into the canal at 1am in the morning?!

Mitch, Sam and I went to Club de Fromage on Saturday after drinking a bottle of absolute between the three of us.. Surprise surprise we were quite drunk by the time we got there and it only got worse… When we arrived it was bizarrely full of girls in their late teens & early twenties with hardly a man in sight – not a good start to a night out!

So a few more double vodkas and red bull later we were dancing with the best of them on the dancefloor… I have vague recollections of a meat pie raffle, which unfortunately we didn’t win, but we can’t win everything…i can remember very little from the night at all, i remember kissing a random and dancing a lot, but i couldn't tell you what they played apart from haddaway - what is love? because i texted jon zpoonz to let him know!

On Saturday morning in a vain attempt to stave off a hangover I downed half a pint of blackberry detox smoothie, unfortunately it only made me feel worse and brighten up the colour of the ensuing projectile! Never mind!

speed dating update!

So last night was speed dating night, and this morning I was suffering the effects!

I think the event didn’t live up to the promise of being an educational wine tasting evening – it was more of a let’s drink some wine and try and guess what it is – which isn’t that helpful… but I did manage to drink quite a bit of wine – get all the tasting questions wrong and have a brilliant time doing it!

I ended up making good friends with a couple of guys, one in particular. Unfortunately my friend who I was with started whinging because she was tired and needed to go home = lame! So we left and were just walking up the street when the guy caught up with us and gave me a hug and a little kiss. I was so drunk, but it really took my breath away – no one’s ever done anything remotely like that to me before. So if he doesn’t tick me today then I’m going to throw a fit because we didn’t swap numbers or anything – arg!

**update**

okay so there's no place to give ticks on the website, so you have to send a message - having toyed with the idea for the whole of yesterday i decide to message the guy and say that it was nice to meet him, blah blah blah, and for him to message me back if he was so inclined - and he hasn't! what's that about? he ran after me! arg! men! i'm so annoyed! i think being able to see whenever someone's read your message is a devil in disguise because if they've read it and not responded you can just get depressed quicker..

wait for the bell

I got an email from an ex colleague yesterday with whom I’ve spent many a bored-at-work hour gossiping over anything that took our fancy, namely the men screwing us around at that particular time. We haven’t seen each other since she left in the middle of the summer last year, but have been chatting on email off and on.

Anyway, so this email I get yesterday sounds very mysterious, she asks what am I doing on Tuesday and after about 5 emails in exchange it turns out that she’s going to a speed dating night and has a spare ticket.

Now, I’ve never been speed dating in my life. I’m unclear on the merits of it for someone like me, I think my impact is better felt after talking for a while, not over a 3 minute timed conversation cut off by a bell. Moreover, I don’t think that the visual bias inherent in getting to know someone in such a manner is a plus point. I prefer to think of myself more as an acquired taste.

That being said, the premise of this particular night seemed interesting. It’s a wine tasting night where we get to drink some wines, get instructed by a sommelier and have some food.. Hmm, now food and inclusive booze is involved my interest is piqued. So in for a penny, in for a pound I’m going. I’m likely to be the youngest there as I’m only a year over the youngest age limit, but that might be good for me.. who knows? Anyway I shall keep you posted – at the very least I’ll get to drink some wine!

ah the wonders of myspace...

i just received this:

Heya,

How are you today hunny? Well I’m sorry about the message and I apologise before I even send it. First of all I do hope you are having a good day? You doing much? I’m bored at work and the kids have been hell today so suffering with headache at the moment, but I’m going to see Beatrix Potter at cinema tonight, so hopefully that will cheer me up.

Well anyway darling, I was hoping we could have a good old natter, you seem really down to earth and I’d love to get to know you. Can I comment first of all, I have to say you have taken my breath away. Your gorgeous, I can’t help writing this, because basically its what I see. I didn’t think I’d ever write this to anyone, but I have to say you are stunningly beautiful. You have lovely hair, the way it flows is amazing and the most beautiful face. Gorgeous eyes, to die for. I mean they sparkle and are sexy, well you are sexy to be honest. I’m going maybe over the top, but I really mean it, if there is a more beautiful girl around, I’ve let to meet her.

Anyway enough of all of that, you’ve probably just thrown up with the cheesiness of it all, but all I can say is I’d love to get to know you. So what are you doing tonight then? By the way I’m babysitting tonight and I’m very happy to wait or tomorrow and chat on here, but I’d love to hear from you tonight, my number is XXXX, please feel free I’ll trust you to text.

Well anyway I really hope to hear from you soon, tell me more about you? What kind of things do you enjoy doing then? Sorry its so long this message, I think I’ve got carried away somewhat, but I mean what I say, speak soon,

Pete xxxxx

amnesty, berlin et al

I can’t remember the last time I wrote an update that didn’t have something to do with who I was shagging or how to get money off XYZ.

After a mdma fuelled night out for Kevin’s birthday I agreed to dress up in an orange boiler suit to protest about the continued illegal detention of people in guantánamo bay for Amnesty at the fifth anniversary of it opening. Can you believe it’s been open 5 years? That’s 20% of my lifetime. Needless to say it’s unlikely that the protest will amount to any change in policy by the US government, or the UK for that matter, however it definitely felt good to be doing something worthwhile. Even if my feet nearly died from sitting on them for so long.

Pictures of the protest can be seen here. I haven’t spotted myself or sam yet, but I might just be being blind!

Tim and I went to Berlin a week or two ago. Unfortunately Tim had been suffering a bit with general illness before we went and after a night out with Jana on our first night pretty much failed to leave the bed for the rest of the trip! He did manage to get out to go to the Pergamon Museum though. If ever you’re in berlin, you have to go. I’m not very au fait with classical antiquities however those on display here were stunning. Particularly the Pergamon Altar which consists of a massive frieze:

To stand in front of it is breathtaking, it’s just really depressing that more of it hasn’t survived, but then to coin a phrase, I wouldn’t be in such good nick if I was 2000 years old(!)

Had another really good night with Jana on our last night, we went to White Trash and got wasted. I ended up talking to this American for most of the evening and didn’t pull him at the end of the night – crazy. Though we did exchange MSN addresses and have spoken since though he’s now in Korea so that’s not much use to me.

In other news, I’m completely despairing over the labour government and the fact that there’s going to be a general election next year and I don’t want to vote labour because it’s time for a change and I abhor Gordon Brown, but I’m not ready to vote Conservative. I don’t know why I’m fretting, I’m in a safe labour seat now so it shouldn’t make any difference what I vote, but that’s not quite the point…

I’m going to see The Caretaker tomorrow at Richmond Theatre. I’m going with my mate Julie from London welsh, it should be good, a few glasses of wine, some food, some theatre, some more wine.. shame I have to go to work on Wednesday… but at least I’m going to Spain on Thursday, so it’s not all bad! My carbon footprint is going to be ridiculously high this year, but f*ck it… I don’t own a car so it’s still better than most!

so i've been told for the first time that i'm a slut... i don't quite know how to take it, mainly because i'm not sure if i'd agree... i know that of late i've been lacking in moral fibre, but does that a slut make? does sleeping with men that are going out with/living with/engaged to girls make me the slut... i don't think that it does...

if i were pursuing these encounters then yes i can see how that could make me slutty, but in each of the cases in recent weeks, i've been on the receipt of an advance and i've just not resisted. but that being said, i did know that the guys in question were 'taken'.

when does this become my problem?

i'm not looking to steal them away from their ladies, i'm not looking to sleep with them on any sort of regular basis, it's just happened. but in these particular cases it's served for me to highlight their lack of happiness in their current relationship, so maybe some good will come of it for them and their ladies in the end.

vip, killers & plan b

i went to see the killers last night courtesy of the manager that my mate slept with last time we went to see them (see earlier post).. thankfully the manager was in vegas so we didn't have to fend him off, but bless him for putting us on the list... swanning round brixton academy with the little sticker on was much fun!

the band were good too, obvious highlight was mister brightside, but the night was marred by the pain in my feet caused by wearing my 'come f*ck me' boots all day.. hey ho we have to make such sacrifices for fashion...

anyway after schmoozing in the vip area for a bit afterwards we went to leave and ended up at plan b which is on the high street... free to get in and they were playing lots of indie and pop, it was wicked... many hours later i ended up pulling this random and yay for me i didn't take him home!

got a taxi home which was only £25 which i thought was pretty good and saved negotiating at least 3 night buses!

can we change?

i'm flirting heavily with a guy i used to date (if you could call it that) when i was in my late teens. the wonders of myspace. but i do wonder what on earth i'm doing, this guy always was trouble. charming and funny, but trouble none the less. when i messaged him on myspace it was just after i'd split with jamie and i was in need of conversation, but didn't consciously think for a minute that we'd still be attracted to eachother (and lord knows we might not be face to face). but i thought it's okay, you're just looking for friendship and anyway you know what he's like so can avoid any unnecessary mess.

but then he goes and apologises, and talks the adult talk the likes of which he'd never have spoken before.. he would say it was all bravado now, but at the time he was a ladies man and a bad boy with it. and now he still has all the charm he used to along with apologies and now i find myself falling into the old trap! it's infuriating in one sense, but in another i do ponder the age old question of whether a leopard can change its spots...

oh how we laughed...

jamie dumped me via text message on friday - how very mature of him.

i don't need messages of well wishing, it merely confirmed a not-so-secret thought that i'd been harbouring that in fact he was too pathetic for me. so yay, good news that's done and dusted. and we don't have to try and pretend to be friends because he's a liar and an idiot. so that's all good.

on sunday i went shopping on oxford street and bought some work clothes which was good and found a nice coat which i'm putting on my christmas list. the rest of the weekend was spent drinking and catching up on television which was fabulous.

today i've managed to get in touch with two old internet love interests which is interesting, not that i'm planning on rekindling anything but it is fun to keep in touch...

i'm currently reading "girl with a one track mind" it's wicked...

don't have your say

i'm full of hate at the moment after reading the BBC's have your say on the police officer who requested to not have to protect the Israeli embassy during the war in lebanon.

It starts off with some reasonable enough comments but before long you have the likes of this:

I know there have to be Muslim police officers for political correctness, but how can we have confidence in them as regards our defences against terrorism? Where do their loyalties lie?

Islamic extremists are at war not just with Israel but with our whole way of life in the UK as a free democratic country.

We know from recent polls that many so-called British Muslims have divided loyalties to put it mildly. Islam counts more than being British.

So in the event of further Islamic terror attacks in the UK how can we trust Muslim police to protect us rather than sympathising with the terrorists?

Albert White, London

Albert White can fuck off

and this:

I personally think we are giving too much credit to religious "restrictions" and belifes in general. My collegaues can go to the prayer room for prayers during the working hours, but I understandbly wouldn't be able to go and sleep somewhere in the middle of the day. The problem is if I tell my employer that sleeping during the day is my religious duty, I will be protected by law! Why any irrational behaviour should be protected and justified because it is someone's "religious" beliefe? And where those "restrictions" came from in the first place anyway?

Khash Sajadi, London, United Kingdom

ARGH!

I know, i should have known better than to read it, but it still depresses me beyond belief! It's all Ian Blair's fault anyway - "immediate inquiry" - urgh

In other news:

I've finally got some work to do - yay! and part of it means that i'll be working in a new building across the road on the 25th floor - the view over london's amazing! So i'm going to try and work there as much as possible.

I'm getting a work mobile phone too!

And it's friday tomorrow, it's payday, Sam and I are going out to drink and dance, and the weekend after that and then on Monday/Tuesday i should find out whether i got the promotion in which case all this new work is for nowt because i won't have time to do it!

so it feels like an age since i did any updating, but actually it's not that long ago at all.

things are still going well with jamie although i was an idiot at the weekend and was just really snappy for no real reason at all - i don't know what's wrong with me at the moment, i think it's because i'm so stressed out because i have absolutely nothing to do at work. for many people this wouldn't be a problem, but it's driving me to distraction, so i'm spending 90% of my working day sat looking at BBC News or gossiping. i can't remember the last time i had to use my brain for anything worthwhile, so when i see someone being stupid it drives me mad! so i'm not responding well to stupid questions at the moment.

on friday it was the leaving do for my best friend at work, which is really lame because she's been spending the last month doing nothing with me so now i'm just doing nothing on my own which is even worse...

but on a positive note, i had an interview the other week for a promotion, and i should find out next week whether i got that or not. basically if i don't i'm going to cry - well at least look elsewhere - anyone know of anyone needing a fabulous project manager?

i start spanish classes tonight which should be interesting, i've enrolled myself in the beginners class, but i might move up depending on how i get on and how much i remember from my school days.

one thing i have been able to dedicate myself to on my train journeys is my reading - i've read a few thriller, the highlights of which have been these two:

the righteous men - sam bourne

a thriller about a dodgy sect and murder. a good train read because it's pretty easy to follow and quite entertaining - i didn't spot the twist which is a bonus.

the abortionist's daughter - elisabeth hyde

this is one of richard and judy's books to read and i thoroughly enjoyed it, but was rather disappointed by the ending, it seemed far too predictable - again a murder book

i'm due to read the year of magical thinking - joan didion next. it's a book about the author's bereavement - i'm trying to come to terms with mine in my old age - i don't think it's something i've ever really done upto now and it's about time i did. but first i've got to psyche myself up for reading it. and then i've got the god delusion - richard dawkins which looks really interesting, he was on newsnight the other week and i had a lot of sympathy with what he had to say so we shall see..

an interesting weekend

for one reason or another, the weekend didn't quite turn out as i expected... on friday night i got home from work and fell asleep, waking up at half 10.. nightmare - went on msn and ended up talking to jamie, for the first time since we called it a day a couple of weeks ago. anyway so it was a bit stilted, but we ended up making plans to go out on sunday to watch the football.

then i had to go to sleep as i was working at the rugby club on saturday. so saturday morning comes and i dutifully go to work. it was quite a fun day, i was working in a bar full of the match sponsors who got absolutely wasted - i love plying people with booze for free! finished about 7 and made my way to the station to go home and get changed before ubop. on the way to the station i bump into a guy from the club invites me "just for one" so we goto the pub... oh dear - drunkenness ensues and about half 10 we leave. Apologies to Camilla for missing out on birthday shenanigans - I'm lame!

after the journey of shame back to my house in the morning i have to quickly turn myself around for drinks with jamie (must look good to remind him of his foolishness)... get to the pub and watch the matches. we had lots of talks and emo, upshot being that we're going to give having a relationship a chance because he can't not have me in his life (big aww). at this point i must point out that when you give someone an ultimatum, even when it looks like it didn't work out - don't cave in and you might get your way...

it's weird because i've spent the last week saying how i'm glad that we're over and i couldn't go out with him anyway, he's too annoying... blah blah blah. it was clearly all self-deluding bollocks because i'm really happy now!
